Mendapatkan gelar SH dari Fakultas Hukum Universitas Indonesia pada tahun 1975 dan berhasil mendapatkan gelar LL.M dan Ph.D dari Universitas of Washington, School of Law, Seattle, Amerika Serikat berturut-turut pada tahun 1984 dan 1988. Beliau telah sangat berpengalaman baik sebagai akademisi maupun praktisi dibidang hukum investasi selama lebih dari 20 tahun. Hukum Investasi dan hal-hal yang terkait dengan International Joint Venture merupakan keahlian yang digelutinya hingga hari ini. Membuka kantor Konsultan Hukum “Erman And Associate” (1975-1980) dan menjadi konsultan hukum pada Adnan Buyung Nasution & Associates (1980-1982). Dekan Fakultas Hukum Universitas Al-Azhar dan Guru Besar Fakultas Hukum Universitas Indonesia ini pernah menerima penghargaan dari University of Washington Chapter of the Order of the Coif karena kesetiaannya kepada dunia akademis dan pengabdiannya kepada masyarakat
